Film: ANDRÉ GREGORY: BEFORE AND AFTER DINNER

Filmmaker Cindy Kleine's very personal portrait of her husband, director Andre Gregory, is a must for theater lovers.  The through-line of the film are rehearsals of Gregory's production of Ibsen's THE MASTER BUILDER starring friend and frequent collaborator, Wallace Shawn, and the eventual parallels with Gregory's own life.

There are clips of Gregory's groundbreaking production of ALICE IN WONDERLAND along with early interviews that make this a real treat for theater history buffs (like us).

Film: The Stages of Edward Albee

The Paley Center For Media will present the New York premiere of THE STAGES OF EDWARD ALBEE a new documentary exploring the life and work of the muti-award-winning playwright.

Ben Brantley, chief drama critic of the New York Times, has stated that Edward Albee is “without peer among American playwrights,” asking the most basic existential questions. This intimate documentary uncovers the life and artistry of the man who continues to inspire and challenge the Broadway community. Albee is casually captured in his loft amid his extensive art collection, as well as relaxing in his summer home in Montauk. Actors Kathleen Turner, Marian Seldes, Bill Irwin, and Bill Pullman reflect on the challenges of performing Albee’s work, in addition to reading from his plays. Albee’s place in theatrical history is considered by playwrights Tony Kushner, Terrence McNally, and John Guare. The Stages of Edward Albee is engaging and revealing, illuminating the creative process and the impact of one illustrious writer on his colleagues and audience.

FILM: Richard Foreman's Once Every Day

The legendary theater auteur, Richard Foreman, returns to film - some thirty-something years after the brilliant Strong Medicine (which can be viewed here). ONCE EVERY DAY will have its premiere theatrical run (after its world premiere at the NY Film Festival in October) at Anthology Film Archives for one week.

SPECTACLES: STUART SHERMAN PRESERVED!

Between 1977 and 1993 Stuart Sherman produced approximately 30 short films, the longest of which is 12 minutes (most clock in under three minutes, with several lasting only a matter of seconds). Critic J. Hoberman celebrated Sherman as an “ingenious editor” in ARTFORUM and noted “the movies resemble his one-man shows in their suggestive, rebuslike juxtaposition of gestures and props. There’s the same deadpan whimsy, but a greater degree of imagistic freedom.”

Anthology Film Archives will present two programs of film and video works by the late, great Stuart Sherman. 

• Program One: twenty-something 16mm films all created between 1977 and 1993 and none running longer than 12 minutes.  The total program runs approximately 90 minutes total.  Program One: Friday, January 18th @ 7:30pm and Saturday, January 19th @ 6:30pm
• Program Two:more than a dozen video works plus special selections from the Stuart Sherman collection at the Fales Library & Special Collections, NYU.  The total program runs approximately 85 minutes total.  Program Two is Saturday, January 19th @ 8:45pm
• Program Three: Solo Spectacles including Tenth Spectacle, Twelfth Spectacle (Language) and excerpts from Eleventh Spectacle (The Erotic) and Eighth Spectacle (People's Faces). This program runs approximately 85 minutes. Program Three is Sunday, January 20th @ 6pm
• Program Four: Group Spectacles including Second Spectacle and Eighth Spectacle.  Program Four is Sunday, January 20th @ 8:15pm and will run approximately 80 minutes.

Charles Ludlam on Film: Anthology Film Archives (8/19-8/22/2010)

In one of the most momentous underground-film-related developments in recent memory, two films by the legendary playwright, counter-cultural figure, and founder of the Ridiculous Theatrical Company, Charles Ludlam, were discovered last year safely tucked away in Ludlam’s partner Everett Quinton’s closet. Rescued from oblivion through the efforts of filmmaker Ira Sachs and Butt Magazine contributing editor Adam Baran, curators of the Queer/Art/Film series, they were screened publicly for perhaps the very first time this past winter at the IFC Center. Their re-emergence is cause for great celebration, and we’re overjoyed to be presenting them both in a weekend of encore screenings, along with a selection of other movies made with Ludlam’s participation. These films are a bona fide revelation, and their discovery represents the restoration of a crucial and heretofore lost chapter in the history of underground film.
