RENO: ALIVE IN AMERICA at TheaterLab

RENO: ALIVE IN AMERICA is the newest, electrifying solo show by the woman the New York Times has hailed as “consistently, energetically, loudly funny.”

Being Alive in America comes with all kinds of uninvited responsibility. You’ve got to apply for a social security number, for instance, a day or so after you’re born. Welcome to the world. Now, initial here…and here.

And no one warns you about it. No one tells to prepare your John Hancock in utero. And no one tells you you’re going to have to know all about stocks and bonds to get by as an adult. Not just a suit-wearing, day-trading climb-the-corporate-ladder kind of adult but ANY kind. You might be a colorist but you’re supposed to have a financial portfolio. Heck, you might be a subterranean, left-handed lesbo and be expected to have one. And that pisses Reno off!

Tennessee Williams Does Chekhov? THE NOTEBOOK OF TRIGORIN

Apparently,  playwright Tennessee Williams was a fan of Anton Chekhov (and, really, who isn't?) and attempted his own adaptation of The Seagull in 1981, where it premiered at the Vancouver Playhouse in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Well, it took an enterprising young theater company, The Attic Theater Company, to give this interesting bit of theater history its New York premiere.

Project Shaw: Mrs. Warren's Profession

project shaw mrs warren's profession

The wonderful Project Shaw which presents monthly readings of George Bernard Shaw's plays has made an excellent case for Shaw's plays relevance to contemporary audiences.

Up next, Project Shaw presents Mrs. Warren's Profession with an excellent cast: Harriet Harris, Richard Easton, Tony Sheldon, Amelia Pedlow, Mr. Lenny Wolpe and Matt Doyle! NY1's Roma Torre will narrate. Project Shaw Artistic Director and Founder, David Staller, directs.  Get there early as seating is general admission, and enjoy being in the usually members-only Players Club!

When Shaw completed Mrs. Warren's Profession in 1893, it was censored for eight years. When it was finally produced on the London stage in 1902, the public was outraged by its controversial content. Reviewers overwhelmingly condemned the play as immoral, citing its focus on prostitution and incest. Today, however, the play is applauded for its astute view of the corruption at the heart of Victorian society. The play centers on Mrs. Warren, who, forced by the economic realities of nineteenth century London, becomes a prostitute and later runs several unsuccessful brothels. Through her characterization, Shaw exposes the corruption and hypocrisy of the "genteel" class. He also explores the personal consequences of such a profession as Mrs. Warren struggles to gain the respect and love of her daughter after she discovers the truth about her mother. Modern audiences admire the play's artistry as well as its subject since, as Shaw notes in his "Apology," "Mrs. Warren's defence of herself and indictment of society is the thing that most needs saying."
