Filmmaker Cindy Kleine's very personal portrait of her husband, director Andre Gregory, is a must for theater lovers.  The through-line of the film are rehearsals of Gregory's production of Ibsen's THE MASTER BUILDER starring friend and frequent collaborator, Wallace Shawn, and the eventual parallels with Gregory's own life.

THE DESIGNATED MOURNER is a monologue-triptych in which three artist-intellectuals recount their experiences as their once-liberal country sinks into political crisis. A famous poet-intellectual, his daughter, and her husband—people made of very different moral fiber despite their shared highbrow interests—witness the subtle and flagrant transformations of everyday life, public affairs and personal relationships until they finally are dragged into the middle of things themselves. This searing and disturbing drama, prescient of much that occurred during the Bush/Obama years, has been called Shawn’s masterpiece. 



THE DESIGNATED MOURNER is part of THE WALLACE SHAWN-ANDRÉ GREGORY PROJECT, a co-production with Theatre for a New Audience and retrospective in celebration of the remarkable 40-year theatrical collaboration between Wallace Shawn and André Gregory.

Last year, The Public Theater co-produced, to great acclaim, GATZ (a unique word-for-word staging of The Great Gatsby) created and performed by Elevator Repair Service (ERS), one of America's most acclaimed theater ensembles. This season, The Public reunites with ERS for a co-production of ARGUENDO, a playful riff on the 1991 Supreme Court case Barnes v. Glen Theatre. In this provocative case, a group of exotic dancers, citing the First Amendment, challenged a ban on public nudity. ERS stages the oral argument of the case verbatim with their signature theatricality, wit and physical precision. The production design features a breathtaking swirl of animated text projections by celebrated visual artist, Ben Rubin. 

ARGUENDO was co-commissioned by The Public Theater, Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company and Wexner Center for the Arts at The Ohio State University.

Shawn’s most outlandish work to date, GRASSES OF A THOUSAND COLORS, is a disturbing and anomalously beautiful play that explores the role of human beings in nature and the role of nature in human beings, sexuality being as Shawn says, “nature’s most obvious footprint in the human soul.” The play’s central character is a doctor who believes he has solved world hunger when he figures out how to rejigger the metabolisms of animals to tolerate eating their own kind. This has unexpected consequences. The play tells a story about the doctor, his wife, and his lovers, that is also a story about human beings and animals and the planet we live on.

But for a soldier set to enforce the imperial will and the queen of a people intent on throwing off the yoke of empire, there is no place for personal desire. McCraney creates a stripped down, radical new version of Shakespeare’s gripping story of romance set against a world of imperial politics and power play and transports us to 18th century, sun-soaked Saint-Domingue on the eve of revolution. 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Drama: DISGRACED

The 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Drama (and a nifty $10K) has been awarded to Disgraced by Ayad Akhtar, which premiered at American Theatre Company in Chicago and had a successful production at Lincoln Center Theater's LCT3, starring Aasif Mandvi (see above).

Also nominated as finalists in this category were: the wonderful Rapture, Blister, Burn by Gina Gionfriddo, which had its world premiere at Playwrights Horizons and 4000 Miles by Amy Herzog,which debuted at Lincon Center Theater's LCT3 and then was remounted at LCT's Mitzi Newhouse Theater.

Monday, April 15th: Pulitzer Day

On Monday, around 3pm, we will find out if the Pulitzer committee has given an award for Drama.  Speculation has started as to possible plays/playwrights to recognize but as last year's award went to Quiara Alegria Hudes' Water By the Spoonful - which wasn't on anyone's radar - we assume anything is possible.  (Admittedly, New Yorkers seem miffed when a non-NY show wins this award.)  The winning play (or musical) has to have had a press opening during the calendar year 2012.

Here are are few titles we'd like to see considered:

• 3C by David Adjmi
• The Big Meal by Dan LeFranc 
• The Great God Pan by Amy Herzog
•  Mission Drift written by the TEAM in collaboration with Heather Christian and Sarah Gancher (oooooh -would they ever give a Pulitzer to a devised work?) 
• Rapture, Blister, Burn  by Gina Gionfriddo 
• Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike by Christopher Durang
• We’re Gonna Die by Young Jean Lee
• What Rhymes With America by Melissa James Gibson

Some other contenders are: 4,000 Miles also by Amy Herzog, The Whale by Samuel D. Hunter, and Disgraced by Avad Akhtar.  And of course this is just our NYC-biased list.

We shall know on Monday afternoon...

When Elmo close Elmo appear far
The army Gathers

Written while the writer was working serious hours in Times Square FURRY! follows one man in his Elmo suit while he navigates turf wars, knife wounds, the health issues of his only son, and his own lingering sanity. Armed only with his lone copies of The Art of War and Good Night Moon he gathers his army of Cookie Monsters and otherwise as he slowly expands his turf from 42nd st to 45th and beyond. Is the audience full of Elmos? Will he have to take violent action? When Elmo is close will he appear far? Will this end badly? We'll see.
